Could someone define SCM- supply chain management?

Can someone help out a desperate college student and define SCM- supply chain management? I need a really beefy explanation of this for a paper I'm working on and I would be ever so grateful! Thanks!

Supply chain is the part of purchase department.it is the heart of the compay as the work starts from this department.

Supply Chain means providing a steel chain for someone in need. Such as Bill needs to borrow a chain from Tom because is truck is stuck in the deep mud. Bill has received a Supply Chain from Tom.
